A lot has been stated in the press just a while ago about the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti smoking law in England. Conditions have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big tax breaks to help keep the businesses afloat. But will the online adaptation of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or will it not compare to its land based opposite?
Bingo is an established game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game of late had witnessed a recent resurgence in appeal with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo halls in place of the discos on a weekend. This is all about to be reversed with the legislating of the anti cigarette law all over United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be able to puff on cigarettes while marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public area will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favorite places where players enjoy smoking.
The effects of the smoking ban can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo parlors. Numbers have dropped and the business is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where have the players gone? Certainly they haven’t forgotten this classic game?
The answer is on the net. Players realize that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a beverage and fag and in the end, have a chance at huge jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened almost perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on online is unlikely to replace the communal part of going over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the governing edicts have left a number of bingo players with no alternative.
