An abundance has been reported in the press not long ago about the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the cigarette ban in Britain. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded big tax cuts to help keep the industry afloat. However can the internet adaptation of this quintessential game offer a salvation, or might it never compare to its real life kin?
Bingo has been an age old game historically played by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game recently had witnessed a recent resurgence in appeal with younger people deciding to visit the bingo halls rather than the bars on a Saturday night. This is all about to get flipped on its head with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over Britain.
Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 all public places will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most favorite places where many people like to smoke.
The results of the smoking ban can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo halls. Players have dropped and the business is absolutely struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Of course they have not abandoned this age old game?
The answer is online. Players realise that they can gamble on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a drink and smoke and still enjoy huge jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course betting on on the web can never replace the social part of heading down to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of people the law has left a lot of bingo players with no option.
