Oklahoma has long been interrelated with Bingo. This is because the Amerindian tribes of Oklahoma have run Bingo sessions for decades. Patrons from every one of the surrounding states pile in vans and travel to Oklahoma to gamble on Bingo over the weekends.
The 1988 (IGRA) Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was introduced after a benchmark decision by The U.S. Supreme Court just the year prior. Since that time, 23 of the thirty nine American Indian tribes located in Oklahoma have established gambling halls. The Chickasaw were the initial Oklahoma Indian band to take advantage of the betting rules, and at this time operate ten gambling halls of their own. Bingo was the game on which the above-mentioned gambling halls were founded. Electronic games such as slot machine games were not permitted, because they are believed to contribute to gambling problems more than bingo.
In recent years, Oklahoma governing edicts have changed to allow for large Native wagering gambling halls. You will now see Native gambling dens with slot machines, video poker and twenty-one tables. Craps and roulette are still not legal in the American Indian gambling halls as of yet, although that is only a matter of time. No one can authority what having other games in the bingo houses will do for the popularity of bingo.
