An abundance has been written in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt because of the cigarette ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big tax breaks to assist in keeping the industry alive. However does the internet variation of this quintessential game present a reprieve, or will it not compare to its bricks and mortar kin?
Bingo has been an age old game historically enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. Although the game recently had undergone a recent return in appeal with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo parlours in place of the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the enacting of the cigarette ban around UK.
Players will no longer be able to smoke while marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 every public area will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favorite areas where many people enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo halls. Players have dropped and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Certainly they haven’t given up on this classic game?
The answer is on the internet. People realize that they can gamble on bingo from their computer while enjoying a beverage and smoke and still enjoy massive prizes. This is a recent anomaly and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course gambling on online is unlikely to replace the social aspect of going over to the bingo parlour, but for a group of players the law has left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
