An abundance has been reported in the papers recently about the bingo industry being hit because of the anti smoking law in the United Kingdom. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive aid to help keep the industry afloat. But will the web variation of this quintessential game provide a reprieve, or might it never compare to its land based kin?
Bingo has been an familiar game generally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had seen a recent return in popularity with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo parlours instead of the bars on a weekend. This is all about to change with the legislating of the anti smoking law across United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public locations will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favorite areas where players like to smoke.
The results of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Profits have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Surely they have not cast aside this age old game?
The answer is online. Players realise that they can bet on bingo from their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and cigarette and in the end, have a chance at big jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course wagering on on the internet could never replace the social aspect of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left many bingo enthusiasts with little option.
