Much has been stated in the papers just a while ago about the bingo industry struggling because of the smoking ban in the UK. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for huge tax breaks to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However will the internet version of this quintessential game offer a reprieve, or might it in no way compare to its land based equivalent?
Bingo is an familiar game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game lately had witnessed a recent increase in acceptance with younger people opting to hit the bingo parlours in place of the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the enforcement of the anti cigarette law all over Britain.
Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes while dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 all public locations will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most popular locations where players enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Players have plunged and the business is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Surely they have not deserted this age old game?
The answer is on the net. Gamblers realize that they can bet on bingo using their computer while enjoying a beverage and cig and in the end, enjoy big jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on on the internet could never replace the collective part of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left a lot of bingo players with little option.
