Much has been written in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the smoking ban in the UK. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive tax breaks to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. However will the web adaptation of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or will it not compare to its land based equivalent?
Bingo has been an age old game normally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game of late had seen a recent increase in acceptance with younger men and women deciding to go to the bingo parlours rather than the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the legislating of the anti cigarette law around United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be able to smoke whilst marking numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public location will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most common places where players like to puff on cigarettes.
The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo parlors. Profits have plummeted and the business is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they haven’t deserted this age old game?
The answer is online. Gamblers are now realizing that they can enjoy bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a cocktail and smoke and still enjoy massive cash rewards. This is a recent anomaly and has happened just about perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course wagering on online is unlikely to replace the communal aspect of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of players the rules have left a number of bingo players with no choice.
