A lot has been written in the papers not long ago about the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the smoking ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested massive tax breaks to help keep the businesses alive. However can the net version of this traditional game provide a salvation, or will it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar relative?
Bingo has been an established game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game of late had witnessed a recent increase in popularity with younger members of society opting to go to the bingo parlors instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. This is all about to change with the enacting of the anti smoking law around Britain.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. From the summer of ‘07 every public place will not be allowed to permit smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most common areas where players like to smoke.
The outcome of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already barred in the bingo parlors. Numbers have dropped and the industry is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Obviously they have not forgotten this ancient game?
The answer is on the internet. People realise that they can participate in bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a beer and fag and still have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent development and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course playing on the net will never replace the collective aspect of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of people the law has left a number of bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
